Reckless Car Shows Disrupt Worcester Neighborhoods

In recent months, Worcester has seen a surge of unauthorized car shows that have led to reports of reckless driving, gunshots, and property damage. The Worcester Police Department has been working to address these issues and maintain public safety in the city.

Restoring Order and Protecting the Community

Responding to Citizen Concerns

The Worcester Police Department has been actively responding to citizen complaints about the car shows. On July 19th, officers were called to multiple locations throughout the city where these events were taking place. At one location on New Bond Street, a bullet casing was found, indicating a recent shooting incident. At another location on Lincoln Street, officers witnessed a large group of cars driving recklessly and speeding through a busy shopping plaza.

Dispersing Unauthorized Gatherings

When officers arrived at the various gathering spots, they found evidence of the reckless behavior, including skid marks and tire tracks. In some cases, the drivers sped off as the police approached, but the department was able to record the license plates of some of the vehicles. The police also discovered that the group had been posting online about their gathering spots, including a location on the Southwest Cutoff.

Arrests and Trespassing Charges

At the Southwest Cutoff location, officers found around 30 vehicles gathered behind a building. They arrested 53 people and one child, charging them with trespassing. A patrol wagon and a bus were used to transport the arrestees to the police station, and the vehicles were allowed to be driven away by family and friends to avoid towing.

Ensuring Public Safety

The Worcester Police Department has emphasized that these types of dangerous gatherings put innocent members of the community at risk and will not be tolerated. As a precautionary measure, the police conducted an additional search of the Southwest Cutoff parking lot the following day to ensure that no firearms had been left behind by the group.

Ongoing Efforts to Address the Issue

The Worcester Police Department is committed to addressing the issue of unauthorized car shows and the associated reckless behavior. They are working to identify the organizers of these events and hold them accountable. The department is also collaborating with community leaders and stakeholders to find alternative, safe, and legal ways for car enthusiasts to gather and showcase their vehicles.

Maintaining a Safe and Vibrant Community

The Worcester Police Department's actions demonstrate their dedication to protecting the safety and well-being of the city's residents. By responding swiftly to citizen concerns, dispersing unauthorized gatherings, and taking appropriate legal action, the department is working to restore order and ensure that Worcester remains a safe and vibrant community for all.
