At the same time, a Salinas resident was replacing the left rear tire of another pickup, with Krystal Cortez, a 38-year-old from Salinas, standing nearby. Tragically, a black Acura TL, driven by 24-year-old Jose Sanchez Jr. from Salinas, veered off the road and sideswiped Cortez before crashing into the individual changing the tire and the pickup.

The impact of the collision caused the pickup to overturn onto its right side, and the Acura continued to spin, eventually crashing into a white Honda Pilot driven by 29-year-old Miguel Narez from Soledad, who had young children in the car with him. While Narez and his passengers did not report any injuries, Cortez suffered from "abdominal contusions," and the pedestrian replacing the tire succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
