In a startling incident, two 14-year-old boys were apprehended by the Valdosta Police Department after taking a vehicle without permission and leading officers on a high-speed chase that ultimately resulted in a collision. Reckless Driving Leads to Pursuit and Crash

In the early hours of July 18, 2024, a Valdosta Police Officer observed a vehicle driving erratically in a residential neighborhood. The car was traveling at a high rate of speed and disregarding stop signs, prompting the officer to attempt a traffic stop. However, the vehicle failed to yield and instead accelerated, leading the officer on a pursuit. The chase continued until the driver lost control of the car, resulting in a collision at the intersection of East Central Avenue and Lee Street. Both the driver and the passenger fled the scene on foot, but the passenger was quickly apprehended by officers.

Unauthorized Use of a Stolen Vehicle

Upon further investigation, the officers determined that the vehicle had been taken without the owner's permission. The owner of the car, a local resident, later brought her 14-year-old son to the police department, and he was identified as the driver of the vehicle during the incident.

Charges and Consequences

Both 14-year-old boys were arrested and charged with theft by taking a motor vehicle (family violence-felony) and misdemeanor obstruction. The driver, who managed to evade arrest initially, is facing additional charges of fleeing and attempting to elude law enforcement (felony), reckless driving (misdemeanor), and numerous traffic violations.The Department of Juvenile Justice was notified and authorized the detention of both juveniles at a Regional Youth Detention Center, underscoring the seriousness of their actions.

Chief Leslie Manahan of the Valdosta Police Department expressed relief that the reckless actions of the juveniles did not result in any injuries. "We are very lucky that the reckless actions by these juveniles did not result in anyone being injured," Manahan said. "We appreciate the parents' assistance and cooperation in this matter."The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of responsible behavior, particularly among young individuals, and the potential consequences of engaging in unlawful and dangerous activities.
