Celebrating the Legacy of Evangeline: A Musical Masterpiece Captivates Ascension Parish

Ascension Parish residents are set to take center stage in the 25th anniversary production of Evangeline the Musical in Concert, a beloved Broadway-style musical that has captivated audiences across the country. The production, featuring a cast of over 40 actors, including 16 local residents, promises to be a poignant and powerful celebration of the Acadian heritage and the enduring story of Evangeline and Gabriel.

Bringing the Acadian Saga to Life on the Stage

A Lifelong Passion Project

The musical's composer, Paul Taranto, a lifelong Ascension Parish resident, has been at the helm of this production since its inception. Taranto, who will serve as both the music director and conductor, has a long history of bringing this Acadian saga to life on the stage. His first collaboration with Jamie Wax to create the musical was staged at Episcopal High School in Baton Rouge, where Taranto served as the band director for three decades.

A Celebrated Journey

The production has since captivated audiences across the region, with sold-out performances at LSU's summer musical and the Heymann Center in Lafayette. The Strand Theater in Shreveport even recorded a production that was later broadcast on PBS, reaching audiences nationwide. The musical's success has also led to international performances, including at Ava Maria University in Florida, Legatus in Phoenix, Arizona, and an acclaimed production in Nova Scotia, Canada.

Preserving Acadian Heritage

In a testament to the musical's cultural significance, a Canadian grant funded the complete translation of the production from English to Acadian French, allowing for the creation of a full French version. This effort underscores the production's commitment to preserving and celebrating the rich Acadian heritage that is at the heart of the Evangeline story.

A Talented Local Cast

The upcoming 25th anniversary production at the Manship Theatre in Baton Rouge will feature a talented cast of over 40 actors, including 16 residents of Ascension Parish. Among the local performers are Celeste Veillon, who will take on the role of Madame Hebert, and a host of villagers, including Melissa Heroman, Gwen Mahan, Matthew Taranto, Piper Heroman, Caroline Antie, Mia Taranto, Juliet Girod, Bella Heroman, Elizabeth Taranto, Grayson Morgan, Reid Heroman, and Claire Taranto.

A Triumphant Return to the Stage

The production, which will run for three nights from August 22-25, promises to be a captivating and emotional experience for both the performers and the audience. As the Ascension Parish community comes together to celebrate the 25th anniversary of this beloved musical, the stage is set for a triumphant return that will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression on all who witness the timeless story of Evangeline and Gabriel.
