Food safety incidents can arise from a variety of sources, including accidents, inadequate controls, food fraud, or natural events. While policymakers, food safety authorities, farmers, and food business operators play a crucial role in managing these incidents, consumers also have an active part to play. By understanding the potential risks and being prepared to respond, we can collectively strengthen the resilience of our food systems.

The Ripple Effects of Unsafe Food

Unsafe food containing harmful bacteria, viruses, parasites, or chemical substances can have far-reaching consequences, leading to more than 200 different diseases, ranging from diarrhea to cancers. Globally, an estimated 600 million people – nearly 1 in 10 – fall ill after consuming contaminated food each year, resulting in 420,000 deaths and the loss of 33 million healthy life years (DALYs). This vicious cycle of disease and malnutrition disproportionately affects vulnerable populations, such as infants, young children, the elderly, and the sick.
